Biography

| |
The music industry has never been in the dark about Stevie, Elton John, Bryan Adams, Michael Bolton, Def Leppard and The Doobie Brothers to name but a few definitely know who she is. She has sung with them all and is always in constant demand to provide vocals for many others. Her reputation as Britains answer to Tina Turner is well deserved.
With friends like these and a producer like Mutt Lange willing to write and produce for her, a solo album seemed the obvious move. The only problem was fitting it in between other commitments. As Stevie explains “to say it took time is an understatement, I had commitments and so did Mutt.
“Take Six” joined me for “River Roll”, “Was not Was” came in for “Without your Love” , Molly Duncan played sax, Dan Huff from “Giant” along with Reggie Young who used to be in Elvis’s band, not forgetting Paul Franklin from Mark Knopflers group. Now that’s what I call a Great live band !
Out on the Silverstone label, the album was finally finished off in Nashville with some pretty impressive solo guest vocalists, Brian Adams sang the duet “Prove It” with Stevie, while Huey Lewis co-wrote “I thought I’d seen everything” and Mutt Lange sang backing vocals on several of the tracks.
“Stevie Vann” is not however Stevie’s first solo offering. Born in Zambia she began her career at an early age, by her late teens she had released two LP’s in her own right and had been voted top female vocalist in south Africa, a household name Stevie soon became the hottest jingle singer in Zambia singing on virtually every TV and radio advert.
Stevie was offered a UK management deal around that time, and needed no encouragement to pack her bags and head for these shores, where she has been based ever since.
Stevie began to do session work as soon as she arrived in the UK and the first was with Manfred Mann, while forming her own girl group “Bones” when Bones fell apart it was Chris Thompson from Manfred Mann who approached her to form a new band, the result was the band “Night” and a deal was secured with “Planet” which led to two US top twenty singles and two albums “Hot Summer Night! and “The Champ” featuring the theme tune to the Movie. During this time Stevie was living in the US and through Huey Lewis met up with the Doobie Bros eventually co-headlining an American Tour with them.
“Night” finally parted company in ’83 resulting in a succession of prestigious jobs in various areas of the industry, for five years on and off Stevie sang with the James Last soul choir, for two years she toured with Elton John and also contributed vocals to albums and singles for artists all over the world, a few who got the Stevie Vann Lange treatment were Brian May, Def Leppard, Billy Ocean, Joe Cocker, Chakka Khan, David Stewart, Huey Lewis and “Living in a Box”. All this in addition to playing in Molly Duncans “Contraband” in Spain alongside The four Tops and contributing vocals to The SAS band a group of well known artists who band together from time to time.
Stevie has her own Professional Rock Vocal School and her and her husband Alan Bradshaw own their own recording studio called APB Audio at Ebony and Ivory, it is here that she teaches her exclusive and unique vocal technique which has included coaching Robbie Williams, Blue, Sugababes, Sophie Ellis Bextor and many other chart topping artists (see CV) she combines this with the busy recording studio where her and her team write, programme, and produce many international artists.
She also sings live with the SAS band run by Spike Edney of Queen fame the group comprises of 11 musicians and guest singers such as Chris Thomson (Manfred Mann) Tony Hadley (Spandau Ballet) Madeline Bell (Blue Mink) Fish (Marillion) Roger Taylor and Brian May (Queen) Leo Sayer and many others.
